Frequently Asked Questions
Will retrofitting change how my windows look?
In most cases, no — unless you choose to alter the appearance.
We regularly work on villas, bungalows and heritage homes, and preserving the original timber aesthetic is a priority. Where colonial bars are present, we can replicate their appearance while upgrading the glazing performance.
If any visible changes are required, we will always discuss them with you beforehand.
Can you retrofit old villas?
Yes. Villas and bungalows are a large part of our work across Auckland.
Provided the timber frames are structurally sound (or repairable), retrofit double glazing is often an ideal way to improve comfort while maintaining original character.
How long does installation take?
Smaller projects may take 1–2 days. Full-home retrofits can take one to two weeks, depending on the number of windows and access requirements.
We will provide a clear timeline before work begins and complete installations window-by-window to minimise disruption.
Is retrofit better than full replacement?
In many cases, yes — particularly when existing timber frames are in good condition.
Retrofit double glazing is typically more cost-effective and environmentally responsible than full window replacement, while preserving the original character of your home.
However, if frames are beyond repair, replacement may be the better option. We will advise you honestly based on your specific situation.
Does it meet Healthy Homes standards?
Retrofit double glazing can assist with meeting Healthy Homes insulation and draught-stopping requirements by improving thermal performance and reducing condensation.
However, Healthy Homes compliance depends on several factors within a property. We are happy to discuss how double glazing may contribute to your compliance obligations.
Will it reduce outside noise?
Yes — although the level of noise reduction depends on the glass specification selected and other factors such as wall insulation and window seals.
We can recommend glazing options if noise reduction is a key concern.
Can you retrofit double glazing to sash windows?
In most cases, yes.
We regularly retrofit sash, double-hung and casement timber windows. If a particular window type presents structural limitations, we will advise you on the most appropriate solution.
What type of glass do you use?
Glass selection is determined on a case-by-case basis depending on your goals — whether that’s thermal performance, noise reduction, safety requirements or solar control.
We will recommend suitable glazing options during your site consultation.
Do I need council consent?
In most cases, retrofitting double glazing into existing timber frames does not require building consent under Schedule 1 of the Building Act, provided structural elements are not altered.
However, properties located within heritage or character overlay zones under the Auckland Unitary Plan may have additional requirements.
We can discuss your property and advise if any further approvals may be necessary.
